Review
Summary |
More and more these days, we see ads on TV for prescription medications that are created to lower an individual’s levels of “bad” cholesterol. However, the holistic market has also started creating a variety of cholesterol-lowering products. In fact, some of these elements have been shown to be highly effective.
Cholesterol belongs to a category of fats known as lipids, which are used in the body in a variety of functions, including making new cells. Cholesterol comes from both the food we eat, and is produced by the liver. Problems begin when we start creating too much; resulting in deposits of cholesterol in the veins and arteries.
Cholesto-Rite™ is a holistic product which is advertised as being able to support the body’s ability to “regulate levels of LDL or 'bad' cholesterol, maintain healthy levels of HDL or 'good' cholesterol, and support the cardiovascular system” in a general way. When it comes to holistic products, the only way we know to ascertain its overall effectiveness is to take a hard look at its formulary.

 | Ingredients in Focus |
|
Cholesto-Rite™ uses a rather interesting triad of herbal extracts to try to decrease cholesterol levels. Red Yeast Rice and Gugulipid are used in many pedestrian over-the-counter formulas, while Aspalathus linearis, also known as Rooibos, is not.
Rooibos is often referred to as South African red tea, and it has become popular among some sectors of the consumer market because it contains high levels of antioxidants, such as Aspalathin and Nothofagin, and its does not contain Caffeine. It has been traditionally used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-microbial and anti-viral properties. Unfortunately, it has not been shown to lower cholesterol levels; however, it has been shown to protect the liver in some studies.
Red Yeast Rice contains a significant amount of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, Lovastatin, which is a naturally-occurring statin that has shown some really good results in controlling cholesterol. However its abilities are traced directly to the quality of the extract used. Recent studies have shown that some products available on the market actually contain versions of Red Yeast Rice that are of a very low potency. For this reason, it may be important to really look closely at the product you are considering using for adherence to standardization procedures and potency. If this information is not available, we suggest contacting the developer directly.

We decided to try to contact the developer to ask about the potency and the standardization of the Red Yeast Rice used in its formulary. We called several times, and could not get through. We subsequently sent an email, and to date, we have not received a reply, which we find disturbing. We always suggest individuals look for developers who have a vested and proven interest in addressing customer concerns.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
The fact that Cholesto-Rite™ contains Red Yeast Rice and Gugulipid may be enough of a draw for some people to give it a try. In fact, these two elements have enabled some people to lower their cholesterol levels. However, we are a bit concerned that Aspalathus Linearis is used, because it may have no real ability in this arena, and its use may actually dilute the potency of the other ingredients.
We have actually seen far better results with products that use Plant Sterols. Clinical research shows this element has an ability that other extracts don’t – it competes in the digestive system for absorption with cholesterol. This means that the cholesterol is actually rejected by the digestive system, and the Plant Sterol is absorbed. The cholesterol is then passed out of the body undigested. Research studies have consistently shown that it is effective in lowering cholesterol levels – by as much as 40%.
